The consumer/investigative reporter is a self-starter who can work independently on investigative and consumer stories. Responsible for researching information, gathering news materials, interviewing persons both on and off camera, interacting with policy makers and business leaders, and presenting news reports either live on-air or in a pre-recorded format. The consumer/investigative reporter will enterprise story ideas, follow leads, and conceptualize story from beginning to end including vetting consumer emails and phone calls to develop long-form enterprise stories unique to FOX4. Requires a thorough understanding of all journalistic standards and broadcast production techniques used to create visual and compelling content for newscasts. Strong writing, on-air presentation and social media skills are required. Responsible for producing daily enterprise stories as well as investigative stories for major ratings periods; use public records requests and FOIA to obtain information; use databases to research statistics and facts; gather and verify facts through interviews, research and surveillance if necessary.
- This includes generating story ideas, writing and/or producing packages for air and reporting news live on-air and/or in a pre-recorded format. Work closely with News Managers, news producers, and other newsroom employees on story conception and development and execution of story.
- Develop and cultivate sources for investigative news purposes.
- Consumer/Investigative reporter will also cover daily breaking stories as needed and participate daily in reporting news on social media channels and station website.
Must have strong writing and editorial skills; professional, smooth on-camera delivery; ability to handle multiple projects at once and meet deadlines; ability to develop highly promotable ideas for ratings periods; computer literacy with database experience; ability to handle projects from start to finish, collaborating with special projects producers; knowledge of legal and ethical requirements for investigative reporting; experience on surveillance shoots; ability to ad-lib in breaking news situations; ability to make quick decisions and turn multiple stories in a day when necessary; ability to develop sources and build relationships to generate stories; strong communication skills; flexibility to work unusual hours at times. Must also be proficient in handling legal and ethical issues as they arise.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field required.
Minimum 3 years as a consumer or investigative reporter and/or a body of work that demonstrates investigative reporter experience in a television market. Must be able to meet aggressive deadlines while still completing high quality stories.
